(CNN) - While the Republican presidential candidates now have their eyes set on Florida's Tuesday primary, a new poll indicates a tie for first place in the Feb. 28 Arizona primary.

Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich both took in 32% of support among likely Republican primary voters, according to a new survey released Friday by the American Research Group.

Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @politicalticker

The poll was conducted Wednesday and Thursday, almost entirely before the CNN/Republican Party of Florida Debate in Jacksonville.

The two frontrunners dueled on stage Thursday night over a number of issues, including immigration, which is widely expected to be a focal point of the Arizona contest.

According to the ARG survey, 12% said they would back Texas Rep. Ron Paul, while 10% said they would support former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. Twelve percent said they were undecided.

Among those who identified themselves as tea party supporters, Gingrich held a 40%-23% advantage over Romney. Meanwhile, Romney led Gingrich among woman with a 34%-28% margin.

Arizona comes after primaries and caucuses in Nevada, Colorado, Minnesota, Maine and Missouri, but before March 6, also known as Super Tuesday, when 10 states are scheduled to hold contests.

The American Research Group conducted the survey and questioned 600 likely Republican primary voters in Arizona by telephone Jan 25-26, with a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

(CNN) - Former General Electric CEO Jack Welch said Friday Ron Paul was heading towards an inevitable exit in the GOP presidential race –and it's an exit that national Republicans should handle with care.

"The GOP doesn't want to lose those wonderful voters that he's brought on board," Welch said on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien." "So how well (Republicans) treat Ron Paul going forward is a very big deal, just the way you layoff employees is a very big deal."

Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @politicalticker

His interview follows comments from a column he penned for Reuters on Friday, in which he described Paul supporters as impassioned activists and anything but "party regulars."

The libertarian-leaning Texas congressman, who's making his third bid for president, is known for his young, vocal following.

In the first two nominating contests, Paul supporters turned out in droves to throw their weight behind the candidate, giving him a strong third place finish in Iowa with 21% of the vote and a second place finish in New Hampshire with 23%.

While he didn't fare as well in South Carolina and while he's placing little effort in the Florida primary, the congressman has shown no signs that he intends to drop out of the running, even suggesting he would stay in the race until the Republican convention in August.

But if and when that day comes, Welch, a strong backer of Mitt Romney, said Republicans need to be ready.

"There can be no brush-off. No 'Phew, he's gone. Now let's get down to business.' No booby prize. Ron Paul needs to be given a role that really means something to him - a role with influence and voice," Welch wrote in the column.

The former CEO suggested giving Paul whatever he wants, whether it's a prominent role at the convention or an advisory position in a new administration.

"Like a business leader designing a severance package with a key player, the GOP leadership's mindset must be: 'When he walks out that door, Ron Paul is going to be a friend for life'," he wrote.

Sitting by his side in the CNN interview on Friday, Suzy Welch added they know a thing or two about Paul supporters, as their four children are all fans of the congressman.

"If you let them go, they're not going to go into the booth and they're not going to pull the lever for whoever the nominee is," she said. "If you alienate them…either they'll stay home or they'll work against you."

Jacksonville, Florida (CNN) - A super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich is hitting the Florida airwaves Friday with a television ad that essentially accuses Mitt Romney of committing Medicare fraud.

And now one of Gingrich's leading backers in Florida, former Attorney General Bill McCollum, is also raising questions about a Massachusetts medical testing company called Damon Corp. that pleaded guilty in 1996 to fraudulently billing Medicare and paid a $119 million fine.

Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @politicalticker

Romney sat on the board of directors of Damon Corp. after his private equity firm Bain Capital took control of the company in 1989. The fraudulent billing occurred while Romney was on the board, and he personally profited when Bain sold off the firm in 1993.

Romney was never implicated in any wrongdoing, but McCollum, a co-chair of Gingrich's Florida campaign, told CNN that the episode raises questions that are "fair game" in a political campaign.

"I think it raises a serious question about his corporate judgment," McCollum said. "It raises serious questions about his fiduciary responsibility as a board member not to ask the questions that you would ask. Maybe he didn't spend the time because of the nature of the investment banking business he was in. He may have just been on the board because they wanted him on the board."

McCollum said he does not believe that Romney was personally guilty of fraud while sitting on the Damon board.

"But did he perform the function he should have performed?" McCollum continued. "Or was he negligent in that function? Did he really ask the tough questions and get himself immersed in the business he was a board member on, and do the job of unearthing this before the federal government did? Clearly they said he didn't. That's the issue there, not his behavior."

McCollum knows something about Medicare fraud as a campaign issue.

He sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010 against former health care executive Rick Scott, who once ran a company that paid the largest Medicare fraud fine in American history.

Scott narrowly defeated McCollum in the primary after running an avalanche of television ads and went on to with the governorship.

The labor union AFSCME is also running an ad in Florida accusing Romney of "corporate greed" for profiting off the Damon deal.

Jacksonville, Florida (CNN) - With four days to go before the Sunshine State's primary, a new poll indicates Mitt Romney has opened up a nine point lead over Newt Gingrich.

According to a Quinnipiac University survey released Friday morning, 38% of likely Florida Republican primary voters say they are backing the former Massachusetts governor for their party's presidential nomination, with 29% supporting the former House speaker.

Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @politicalticker

The poll indicates 14% are backing Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, with 12% supporting former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

Six percent say they are undecided, but another 32% say they could change their minds by Tuesday's winner-take-all primary, where 50 delegates (the biggest haul so far) are up for grabs.

The poll was conducted Tuesday through Thursday, entirely before Thursday night's explosive CNN/Republican Party of Florida Debate here on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

It suggests that Gingrich's big momentum coming out of his double-digit victory in Saturday's South Carolina primary may be fading. Gingrich had a 40%-34% advantage over Romney in the Sunday and Monday portion of a Quinnipiac Florida survey released earlier in the week.

"Speaker Newt Gingrich's momentum from his South Carolina victory appears to have stalled and Gov. Mitt Romney seems to be pulling away in Florida," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Romney also has a better favorability rating from likely primary voters, which supports his lead in the horse race. Of course, with four days before Election Day, there is time for another reversal. Three in 10 voters say they might change their mind."

The poll indicates men back Romney 36% – 29% percent, a shift from the previous poll, when men backed Gingrich 37% – 33% percent. Romney leads by ten points percent among women, virtually unchanged.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted January 24-26, with 580 likely Republican primary voters in Florida questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

7:16 p.m. ET – As candidates prepare for tonight's debate, polling shows a two-man race for first in Florida. According to a CNN/Time/ORC International survey released Wednesday, 36% of people likely to vote in Tuesday's Republican primary say they are backing Romney as the party's nominee, with 34% supporting Gingrich. Romney's 2- point margin over Gingrich is well within the survey's sampling error.

The other two candidates are far behind, with Santorum of Pennsylvania at 11% and Paul at 9%, and 7% unsure of who they'll vote for.

7:12 p.m. ET – More from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who said on CNN's "John King USA" the GOP needs to move away from being the "old white guy" party.
